At 9:40 pm Monday evening Mason County Fire District 2 firefighters were called to the scene of a structure fire just off of the West Belfair Valley Rd. District 2 fire crews were the first to arrive on scene and assisted South Kitsap Fire and Rescue in putting out the fire in a double wide mobile home.
Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and keep it from spreading. The fire began when food cooking on a stove was left unattended and ignited, climbing a kitchen wall and reaching into the attic. When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the home and spotted the homeowner on the roof attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
Crews remained on scene for over three hours working to protect and salvage items in the home. Firefighters were able to save many of the homeowner’s possessions, including numerous antiques. Heat and smoke damage in the home pushed damage estimates to $115,000. No one was injured in the fire.
