Fire Crews Stay Busy This Last Weekend

As summertime fast approaches, Mason County Fire District 2 has seen a dramatic increase in call volume.  Just this last weekend crews responded to 35 calls, compared to nine calls this time last year.  With this approximately 300% increase crews are likely to have a very busy summer.  Calls for Mason County Fire District 2 are already 161 or a 18% increase over last year.

Crews responded twice to Mason County Fire Districts 5,6,8 and South Kitsap.  In addition they responded to Mason County Fire District 3 once.  Assistance was needed two times from Mason County Fire District 5 during the weekend when as many as four calls were simultaneously happening.  Fire crews from all districts have continued a great working relationship allowing our community to provide this seamless service delivery.  “Our crew’S ability to step up and meet the challenges presented by emergencies this last week-end was fantastic” stated Fire Chief Beau Bakken.

Included in the 30 emergencies were calls ranging from fire alarm activations, boat fire threatening property, car fire, two structure fires in a neighboring community, several serious calls for aid, and two different bike accidents leaving two seriously injured patients.

Crews responded twice to Kitsap County for structure fires; one at the Waste Management facility and the other at a residence on the Old Belfair Highway.

One victim was sent to Harborview Medical Center after being injured on his motorcycle traveling down Highway 106 on Saturday.

On Saturday morning crews responded to the Mission Creek road area for a fully involved boat fire.  Crews under the command of Scott Cooper were able to extinguish the abandoned trailer and boat fire that was threatening to cause a huge wildland fire.  This fire is currently under investigation by the Mason County Fire Marshals Office.

On Sunday afternoon crews responded to assist a seriously injured 12 year old boy when they were faced with hostility from a property owner making threats to the firefighters lives.  Crews requested law enforcement where the male subject continued to make threats and become more hostile.  Crews were able to treat and transport the seriously injured boy to Harrison Medical Center and Mason County Sheriffs Office took the hostile male into custody.
