Small Room Fire Could Have Been Worse.

On the morning of January 11, 2010 crews from Mason County Fire District 2’s stations 21 and 27 responded to the 300 block of Anchor Dr. for a possible structure fire.  When the occupant heard the sound of the downstairs smoke detector she began to worry.  Walking down the stairs she began to smell smoke.  Upon opening the door to her laundry room the owner found heavy smoke and flames coming from around the water heater.  Her attempt to put the fire out was short lived, and she realized that it was time to contact 911.  The call came into MACE-COM dispatch at 11:02.  The dispatcher advised the resident to evacuate both her and her grandson from the residence and wait for the Fire District to arrive.  Units took less then three minutes to arrive on scene and put out the fire.  Damage was limited to the small area around the water heater and some clothes.  Mason County Fire District 2 credits the safety of the occupants to working smoke detectors.

So often homes do not have working smoking detectors, or even worse, none at all.  Please take this opportunity to check your smoke detectors.  If you do not have working detectors they are offered through Mason County Fire District 2 for free.  For more information please contact 360-275-6711.
