Annual Safety Days Coming Soon

On June 14 and June 16 Mason County Fire District 2 will be participating in conjunction with other agencies in our 8th annual Safety Days.  This program includes safety talks from the American Red Cross, Coast Guard, Mace-Com Dispatch, PUD 3, Mason County Sheriffs Office and Harrison Medical Center.  “Our goal is to bring the safety to the students” stated Jeromy Hicks, Mason County Fire District 2’s Community Outreach Coordinator.  Often in other jurisdictions Safety Days is held on Saturday or Sunday’s and not all students can make the training.  Our cooperation with the North Mason School District allows us to hold the training at the individual schools of Sandhill Elementary and Belfair Elementary.  Every year 1100 students are educated in topics from fire safety to water safety.  Along with the day of practical instruction, students are sent home with a homework assignment that has them along with their family plan exit drills in the house incase of a fire.  Once the students complete this assignment it is entered into a drawing for an electric scooter and helmet.  One of each is provide to each school along with root beer floats to every student on the day of the event.  This year we will also be offering prizes such as rides to school in the fire engine and lunch with the fire fighters for the class with the highest level of participation.  In the end this is a fun event for all involved.  Students receive invaluable training, and firefighters get the chance to interact with the community.
